Its known now – really ever since the advent of RAW – as its own thing: Wrestlemania Monday. It’s the night after the biggest event on the WWE calendar and just when you think you’ve seen and heard all the big double-crosses or new additions, you’ve watched the pay-off to a feud that’s been bubbling away or you’ve seen the biggest, baddest “Holy Shit!” moment…along comes Wrestlemania Monday!
Okay, so it might not steal WM’s thunder – but it’s definitely become a big night for surprise returns, for new signees or for the start of a new big feud and so this DVD set traces that, tells the story of Wrestlemania Monday’s evolution.
The first disc is an hour long documentary feature that gives some good behind-the-scenes moments and focusses on the stories of newer comers to the WWE such as AJ Styles – and the return of former Diva, Maryse.
The doc starts off well but swiftly repeats itself, showing over and again handshakes with Triple H as the dealmaker welcoming new talent. The behind-the-scenes glimpses help to sell it at first but like any reality TV show it’s drama stretched thin and footage stretched even thinner. It ends up limping over the line.
Fortunately it tags in two discs of bonus content – matches and events from past Wrestlemania Mondays. So we see the (Ultimate) Warrior’s final appearance (2014) and the n.W.o betraying Hulk Hogan (back in 2002).
A lot of memories across the last two decades – kicking off with matches and promos from 1995 and working through various firings and hirings and a 10-Team Tag Battle Royal (2007), a lumberjack match for the tag belts (2009) and several solo championship belt matches.
Usually I get bored with these sets halfway through the bonus content, or even right after the main feature, but this time around it was the “Extras” that kept me interested. I enjoyed the idea behind celebrating Wrestlemania Monday, even if it was just an extended promo to sell the actual Wrestlemania event. But it’s the context – in the promos and matches across the years – that really gets the job done this time around.
