The Wellington Film Society’s program for 2018 is well underway now. We’re moving up towards week three, film three. Last week’s screening of Fantastic Planet was wonderful.
From surreal French cartooning to film noir it goes – with a screening of The Lady From Shanghai.
One of the classic film debates is – basically – whether this is ‘good’ or not. The Society’s notes for this film tell a lot of the background and story. It’s one of those films from that era (1947) where the studio stepped in and killed any real semblance of a flowing storyline, demanding set pieces for the stars instead.
Rita Hayworth is there. It’s one of four times she’ll be featured in Wellington Film Society screenings this year. Orson Welles is all over this film – in every frame, narrating, directing…
I’ve never seen it. But I’ve read about it, heard a lot about it. I guess this is a big part of why you join the Film Society – to see the films you’ve often heard about. The ones you’ve never seen. And see them on the giant screen of the Embassy Theatre in Wellington. I can’t wait for this one!
