Is This Anything?
Arch Hill Recordings
You call your album Is This Anything? and you’re asking for an answer. Right? So is this actually anything? Well, yes. And no. Yes, it’s the second album from Rangiora trio, Transistors. Because no one seems to know about any other bands from Rangiora they have purloined the dubious-to-the-point-of-meaningless title, Rangiora’s Finest. Just as they’ve purloined a rugged power-pop-as-punk-music formula that is less sickly-shit than Green Day but not a patch on obvious heroes like Buzzcocks.
So is this anything? Yes. It is. It’s the first album from “Rangiora’s Finest” in three years. It’s a good-enough album of fuzzy, rugged, kinda-edgy almost-punk.
But is this anything good? Not really. It’s okay. It’s probably fun to see if you’re young and live in a small town and don’t get a lot of music – but quite why this is being trumpeted as something wonderful is beyond me. But then I hear the album’s closing track, Dirty Diver, and there’s something good happening here.
There are some shades of the Flying Nun/Dunedin Sound, there is something here. But it’s not great. It’s not must-hear/must-have. It’s only okay. And only okay doesn’t mean a lot to me.
