Director: Jing Chen
A short film – merely a conversation of just 11 minutes – but it screens as part of a series of shorts at the Doc Edge Festival – To Be Or Not To Be is a snapshot of the busking-career, motivations, influences and frustrations of well-known Kiwi musician Luke Hurley.
Jing Chen has a great eye for the street shots, for how to frame Hurley in the right hue of poignancy. This is a struggler’s story – and yet there’s huge heart and subtlety to it.
A remarkable short piece. Part of the magic on display at this year’s Doc Edge Fest.

Mermaids is part of this year’s Documentary Edge Festival in New Zealand. The festival’s films screen in Wellington May 9-20 and in Auckland May 23-June 4..
