UB40, The Best of UB40 – Volume 1 (1987)
I’d never go defending UB40 – beyond saying they are (were) a very good live band. And the first couple of albums were solid. Also I used to love this best-of; one of the go-to car-trip tapes when I was a kid. We’d load this puppy in and set off – happy. But the writing was on the wall – always. Even the fact that this was released with that subtitle “Volume 1” showed a lethal arrogance. You ever heard Volume 2? My god that’s ghastly. And then – almost implausibly – there were more hits comps from the band/label to follow. Who do these cunts think they are? I bought this – just recently. Probably what I’d really want is that first album – but I bought this since it had always served us well. It’s hard to make it through this now – but there’s a handful of good songs on the first side. But what sort of back-handed compliment is that: when your greatest hits makes a killer EP it says something. Even worse when you’ve gone and released three
fucking volumes of “Best Ofs” and – still – it’s the first four songs on the first one that, er, speak volumes.
