Nightmares on Wax, Smokers Delight (1995)
I’m no stoner – these days I have the occasional thought that it’d be great to sit down with a joint and watch Wonder Pets or for that matter A Dog’s Show/Tux Wonder Dogs, but that thought disappears quicker than any cloud of smoke (ever appears). The real thing I can do if I ever want to (re)imagine a (former) stoner-life is play this Nightmares on Wax album. I bought the lovely reissue recently, a couple of months back – but this has been a part of my life on and off across the last decade and a half. I first discovered it when working late nights in a record store back in the mid/late 90s – this was one of the go-to albums to play; people would sift into the store – often you could smell the weed (who else was browsing CDs at 9pm midweek…) and so we were giving them the perfect soundtrack I guess. I don’t like all of the Nightmares on Wax stuff – there are a couple of albums I can’t be bothered with, but this still stands up. And some of the recent material feels like a real return to form.
