Sly & The Family Stone, Fresh (1973)
Funny, I’ve owned this album before, on CD. And I bought a copy for about $3 – no cover, just the disc. That’s okay I figured – I only care about the music (especially true when it’s someone like Sly & The Family Stone). Though this was at the height of my CD-buying. I had thousands of CDs, a list on the computer, all of them alphabetised and I liked to have the covers. Things change. And maybe that was the start of the change…Anyway, I buy the record this weekend – it’s got a sign on it saying it’s water-damaged (you can see that before you see the sticker announcing it) but it also points out that the record is in great condition. I take it to the counter to double-check. If you care about the music and just want that it’s fine – says the man at the counter. Or he mumble-speaks something along those lines. And I agree. And the not-so-fresh Fresh comes home with me. And goddamn it’s a great fucking record.
