Easy Star All-Stars, Radiodread (2006)
I first became aware of the Easy Star All-Stars with their first album – Dub Side of The Moon. It is a brilliant set of covers (reimaginings) of that classic album. Performed in order. These days I get way more of a kick out of listening to that than I do the original. And so I was on board straight away. Look, they lost me with time – but I really loved their Radiodread record. I’m not sure I did when I first heard it – but with time it grew to be at least as good as Dub Side and also these days I’m more likely to want to listen to this than to Radiohead – not that I’ve given up on the band, it’s just a bit played-out for me. Of course if you’ve read any of the recent Vinyl Countdown posts you’ll have noticed that during lockdown I really got back into reggae and dub in a big way. So seeing this album recently – I was on holiday, visited that great record store in Taupo – I had to add it to the collection. I’m very glad I did. I think I stupidly traded in my Dub Side a while back. But I got a lot of spins from it. And now of course I’ll probably want to buy it all over again.
