Rhian Sheehan, Stories From Elsewhere (2013)
I’m pleased to have this Rhian Sheehan album – on vinyl – for a bunch of reasons. Rhian is a mate, and I love his music; he does great album packages, the theme carried over through music to artwork and such. Also I reviewed this album – and love it! – and I got to see the live show (also fantastic). I’ve had a copy of the LP for a while, and I play it often – been waiting to hook up a time and chance for Rhian to sign it for me – as who doesn’t love a signed LP, right? But he’s busy. And I certainly do a decent enough job of pretending to be. And then – I asked him if he’d mind chatting with me for my Podcast. At the time it was just an idea, didn’t have one in the can or anything – but knew he’d make a great subject. And he agreed. A bit more dithering about from there – at my end. And then, finally, I’m there – in his studio for a couple of hours and using his ZOOM recorder (since mine failed) and drinking a nice cuppa that he made and looking at all the amazing framed movie posters (many of them signed) and listening to vinyl soundtrack albums and talking amongst guitars and keyboards and percussion instruments. Getting a real feel for how it is that this guy, a friend, a real talent, sits down to create the musical worlds that live – and hang together so well – on albums like this. Well, if you haven’t already – and you’re interested still – check out the episode of the podcast where I spoke with Rhian Sheehan. His story is interesting. And he’s very clever. And yes – he signed my album! Bonus.
