The Vinyl Countdown # 787

Ngaire, Ngaire (1991)
ngThe song was everywhere! For a while. And though I can’t remember really being a fan – as such – I didn’t mind it. I lived with it. I was at school and it was a hit, and a Kiwi artist having a hit of any kind was a novelty, and covers of 60s pop songs, a bit of a beat or something behind it, was something in the early 90s too. I bought this album – by Ngaire – for $2 in a junk-store in Masterton recently. (Cunt of a joint, that Masterton). I um’d and ah’d about buying this one – part of a stack of dubious/great finds – but I bought it. Glad I did. Played the whole thing through and it stands up. Kinda. Got a bit boring at the end of side two, but I was far more impressed with this than I expected. Something honest/earnest about it – slightly charming. Masterton could learn a lot…(here’s a wee thing about the label, some background).
