Darcy Clay, Jesus I Was Evil (1997)
I met Darcy Clay at one of his rare (instore) live appearances. There weren’t many. And shortly after he became a bit of a thing he was gone. Done. Not for this world. Not for long anyway. I wonder what he’d think – if anything – about his song, and the little supporting EP living on. I think it’s wonderful. I wrote a chapter in my book about it. I republished that chapter and said most of what I need to say about Clay and this set of recording here. But now I have a copy of the record – the 12” 45rpm 6-track ep. Yes, it’s a set of bedroom recordings, bedsit-quality at best. But I don’t reckon it’s any sort of wanker-move owning the vinyl (my CD player doesn’t really work anyway…and/or it fights for space with The Fairies and The Wiggles). It’s nice to have this. Nice to hold it. To hear it. Again. Nicer still, my buddy Sam needed a postal address to get a record sent for himself (he’s overseas) and when it arrived he’d added one for me. Merry Christmas he said. Merry Christmas indeed!
