Stevie Wonder, Characters (1987)
Recently I put on a Stevie Wonder DJ set – all Stevie Wonder songs, something I had wanted to do for a while; I knew it could work. And it did – it sounded good – really good (here’s the playlist based on that afternoon/evening’s run of great, great tunes). I had all the Stevie Wonder records I needed – apart from this one. Which I used to have – and then tossed away, because it’s awful. I’ll stick up for most of the 1980s drek (some if it isn’t even terrible, it’s just not a patch on his 70s high point). I even played something from the Woman In Red soundtrack (though not I Just Fucking Called To Say I Fucking Love You). But this album – dud. Disaster. Awful. Bland. Uninspired. And far worse. I carted it along and couldn’t find a single thing to play off it. The pits. Awful. Embarrassing. His worst album by quite some way…The saddest part of this all? Well, that I went out and bought the album a second time just to have it as part of the collection…(I need help!) cha-cha-cha!
Sample Track: Nothing!
