V/A, An Introduction to Gospel Song (1962)
If you strip away the wars, and the Facebook arguments – even if you’re not religious at all, I find it hard to believe you could deny the power of religion as guiding force for some good in the world. I think primarily of all the amazing music created in honour – and so often out of fear – of god. Your god and/or anyone else’s god/s…such worship is not for me but there’s something incredible when you hear the songs of devotion; something otherworldy…I lucked onto this one, scooped it up just as it had been put out in the store for a second (or third) go at the world. If I hadn’t been there at that point to pick this up I might never have known about it, never have heard about it. Now that’s not divine intervention – it’s just good timing. And so I hear this as just incredible music. Never mind who they’re hollerin’ about and why – it’s pretty fucking moving.
Sample Track: Roll Jordan Roll (Fisk University Jubilee Quartet/Fisk Jubilee Singers)
