Elvis Costello and The Attractions, Get Happy!! (1980)
His fourth album in as many years, his third with the band, the very middle of a white-hot streak, I can’t come out and say this is Elvis Costello’s best album, nor even my all-time favourite, but sometimes it feels like both. And that’s good enough when it’s an artist with a half-dozen truly magic records and another half-dozen albums right up their chuff too…certainly this is the album I reach for first when reconnecting with Costello, and in particular those dizzying early years. There’s so much here, so cleverly crafted, these bite-sized songs – actually packed with loads of bite. He’s a clever fucker. Which is precisely what people try to hold against him. And there really aren’t many who could ever try and keep up.
Sample Track: New Amsterdam
