The Cars, Shake It Up (1981)
I spent so long with the Greatest Hits album – still (easily) one of the very best single-volume best ofs by anyone – that I’m still getting used to listening to The Cars as an album-artist. Great singles. Great band. Amazing compilation. Good videos. But were they anything much as an album-band too? Yes, yes they were. I have most of their records – the early run with all the great-great songs on them anyway. And though they mostly have quite horrific record-covers (this one might take the cake) they are a strong-enough albums-band. Still love their singles and the obvious hits are, in many cases, the very best. But there’s some gems on the albums that didn’t make it onto the compilations. Such a great band.
