Kenny Rogers, Love Will Turn You Around (1982)
When my grandmother’s husband died I inherited some records – which meant finding a small handful of gems and wading through a couple of crates of junk. In a way I’m still searching through the detritus – because it’s of no use to anyone else really, can’t sell it nor give it away. Besides, these records were promised to me for years, talked up like some holy grail…you know the deal. Anyway, there were about 15 Kenny Rogers albums – I shit you not. And I don’t have a huge problem with Kenny, I like some of the stuff he did in the70s and 80s and the material before that too – that First Edition stuff is top-notch. Aces in my book. But as we get into the 80s it gets pretty soppy. Just checked this one out again, saw it peering at me from the shelves…and then I saw the title track was the theme to a movie that Kenny starred in called The Six Pack. Man, I loved that film. My brother went to it at the movies I think. He came home crowing about it and we caught it on TV a few years later. Cool wee film. Probably awful to revisit. But now this album has its story, its connection. It’s reason to be on my shelf. God I’m a sad-o like that…
