Los Lobos, How Will The Wolf Survive? (1984)
I was having the conversation I feel like I so often have – once again just recently – where I defend Los Lobos and point out they were (and still are) more than the La Bamba soundtrack (not that there was anything wrong with that). A friend asked who was left, after seeing Prince, on my “bucket list” (hate that term – his words in this case, not mine) and I said, straight away, “Los Lobos”. And he said, “really?” And I jumped into how amazing David Hidalgo was both in and out of the band and to all the things they’ve done, styles, songs, albums, what a formidable live band…and when I finally came back up for air he was…gone. He ran away. No, not quite true, but it felt a bit like that. I know I’m not at all alone in my love for this band, but sometimes it still feels a bit like that. The great solace is almost any of their records.
