Becker-Fagen-Diaz, You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It (Or You’ll Lose That Beat) (1971)
I haven’t yet seen the film – but I will, one day – not just because I tend to watch films if I like (or even just own) the soundtrack but also because the film features Richard Pryor and was edited by Wes Craven (his film debut) and I like that sort of trainspotter-y nerd-stuff. (Also, in my experience – so far, any film featuring Robert Downey Sr. is at least interesting). The soundtrack to this hippie-fare was created by the trio of Walter Becker, Donald Fagen and Denny Diaz – shortly after they would officially form Steely Dan. And you can hear first, tentative steps toward that sound here. There are one or two nearly-great songs and a few meandering instrumentals – but I like it, probably just for the curio-value. Sometimes that’s enough.
