Naked Eyes, Burning Bridges (1983)
This was a recent find – and a good one – because I love Naked Eyes. By which I really mean I love their cover of Always Something There To Remind Me – so good you don’t (quite) process it (straight away) as a cover. I’ve just thought of this now, but that’s the true test of a really great cover; you dig it as a song, not (just) because of the song then you click that there’s a familiarity, perhaps cloaked in this new version, but something seeps in, reminds you you’ve always known the song on some level…anyway, it always works for me. A top pop song and a favourite cover. And when I first heard it as a kid maybe it was the first version of the song I heard, certainly it was the one that stuck. And then I never quite lined it up alongside other versions until later on. I have the single but I had to hear more from this band – and then when playing the record I realised I had. But I had only ever owned the big hit single on compilations (and the actual single) never an album by the band. Turns out this is a pretty great record. And I thought the cover of Always Something would be A Very Hard Act To Follow. (Well, er, that’s the song right before it actually).
