Kamasi Washington, The Epic (2015)
I called it pretty early on – decided that it was going to be the best album of 2015 (for me). And then I wrote a review, still sure that it was the towering achievement of that year. I stand by it – of course. No other record meant as much to me last year. And it was a great year for music. And as is the way with the very best albums that you are sent to review – given a file, sometimes still given CDs as well or instead – you want to get the LP to store, to keep, to remind you…well, that’s how it works for me. Most of the time. But I held off on this one, as it’s a big investment – both time-wise and regarding the coin too, sure – but finally I’ve purchased it. It’s still sealed. Waiting. I can wait. And so can it. One day I’ll sit down with all six sides of it. A glass (and/or bottle) of whatever is calling. And as much of the music from the heart and heart and soul of Kamasi Washington as he could channel onto this glorious celebration of music.
