V/A, The British Pop Collection (1983)
Every time I do any sort of themed DJ set I like to go and get a new album, or a new old album, a 2nd-hander. I might not even get to play much of anything from it but it’s a little treat, an incentive, a prize for confining myself with a particular era/genre/artist…I already have a full crate for any themed night but it’s just one more record…And so it was when I decided to play a Best of British set at the pub a year or so back after a World Cup cricket match. It was the match where we slaughtered England. The pub was full by 6pm. I held off playing until the winning run was hit and straight in with Dreadlock Holiday, natch. But there were some good songs played that night. Not many from this 3-LP boxset. But this was just my back-up. And it’s been a handy back-up a few times since. A bunch of great songs, of course. Plenty of time to delve, properly.
Sample Track: Sons and Lovers (Paul Jones)
