The Chipmunks, Chipmunk Punk (1980)
We’ve all, I’m sure, done that thing of playing records at the wrong speed – for a giggle. I was hooked on that when I was a kid. The S==L==O==W sound of a 45 played at 33, and the zippy-quick-funny sound of the opposite, a 33 played at 45. And then Alvin & The Chipmunks came along and it became a funny thing to do, to make everything a “Chipmunks Remix”. I also ruined a few of the records at home when rap music permeated the mainstream and I tried to ‘scratch’ on the family record-player…I had a few novelty records as a kid, they’re all gone now. I used to wish I had some of them still. Now I have a few things similar, for Oscar. And I don’t wish I had them back any longer…
