Leon & Mary Russell, The Wedding Album (1976)
Here Leon Russell had just married Mary McCreary (of the band Little Sister) and so they released this – their wedding album; it arrives at the end of a run of classic Leon Russell albums. I’d only just heard this album recently – on a Leon binge – and then in America I find the record for $1.50 in this great old Oakland bookstore, one of several LPs I purchased. I bought about 15 records I guess, enough where it was exciting and realistic to carry them back home, not a bind and not likely they’re break or be ruined. The cost was so low that I was prepared to lose one or two in the travel if I had to – but not the case. All arrived back safe and sound. And this album is great. Maybe not up there with the very best of his albums in the years just previous to this but a fine set of songs nonetheless. Leon Russell is hard to beat. One of those guys that has left his fingerprints all across some very great music.
