Herbie Hancock, Thrust (1974)
I went through a huge Herbie Hancock phase a decade or so ago – all the albums, pretty much; all the phases anyway, all aspects/eras of his leadership. I knew he was good but it was albums like this that sealed the deal – actually this album was the big one, because it introduced me to the great Mike Clark, astonishing talent – a tune like Actual Proof, right? Oh man! So I bought up loads of the Herbie things on CD, deluxe edition, extra tracks, liner notes…and then I cherry-picked a few to grab on vinyl. Never got around to this one until just recently. Whenever I want to reconnect with Hancock, particularly the funk/fusion aspects of his playing this is the one. This is the one.
Sample Track: Butterfly
