King Loser, Caul of the Outlaw (1996)
How I loved this proud mess of a band – loved? – I mean love, I’m still very fond of King Loser, and love giving this album a whirl, and the other couple that arrived before it. I was probably mostly into this though – and only because my mate had the other albums so I bought this one, between us we had them all. We’d go and see the band – a few times at uni, we saw them towards the end of their run I guess…but so good. Sometimes a fall-over mess. Sometimes the best band you ever saw, certainly the only one that mattered. I had a good fight with a good mate one night, he couldn’t get his head around why we’d all want to see a band like King Loser. “They can’t”, he said, so sure he was right, “even play – at all; they aren’t good!” But I pointed to the
room full of people loving it and suggested that the proof was right there, certainly the only proof that mattered. He left in a huff. And we probably all went on to enjoy our nights more as a result. Wonderful to find the LP after years in the wilderness – for me and the band both I guess. Dropped the needle on it last night. It just all came flooding back. Can’t wait to see ‘em (at least) one more time…
