Warpaint, The Fool (2010)
For me with Warpaint it really all started here – yes, the EP before this debut album is great (and I got to that after) but it was The Fool that sold me on the sound of the band after the promise of some of the early, vital/viral YouTube clips. Such a great band. And not a foot wrong since this – this year’s album is obviously a must and a great development, songwriting-wise, but to head back to the debut now is to hear those wonderfully woven textures of murky, mercurial guitar. The way the drums cut through and those proud but sinewy bass-lines. Such a great band. Along with The Roots and Drive-By Truckers (and really all three bands are as different from one another as could be) Warpaint is one of my favourite groups of the last decade/half-decade. A grew wee catalogue building and a few worthy side-projects/solo albums to investigate too. For me it all started here. So this is where I return. I’ve only just picked up this double-LP but the album’s never not been on high-rotate in some format.
