Bee Gees, Main Course (1975)
Such great songwriting and some kick-ass grooves and feels man! I have no shame about loving the Bee Gees – and just when I think I particularly love their 60s pop balladry I think of the full-blown disco era and how there was some magic there. And then after. And then, particularly, an album like this – disco-tinged but full of all sorts of great writing. Nights on Broadway is a favourite. And Jive Talkin’ is a deceptively slinky, tricky groove. But damn there’s some songwriting here! Some really great chops from some really great writers. Also some great singing too. A ridiculously malinged/underrated group really. I think this might be the first original Bee Gees album I’ve bought – I own loads of compilations and live albums and I had the early albums on CD but this is definitely the first original record I’ve purchased. And it’s long been one of my all-time favourite Bee Gees albums. A great range of styles on display here. Just before they tumbled over into Disco mega-stardom. The beginning, then, of the reinvention.
