Richard Carpenter, Time (1987)
I recently shared a photo of this album on Facebook and a clip of that duet where Richard tried replacing Karen by getting Dusty Springfield to sing. And someone wrote, “I have that album in my garage”. And I wrote back, “best place for it”. Banter. But it made me drag the record back from “the garage” for a few more spins. It’s mostly dreadful. It is the audio-equivalent of that soft-focus, soft-porn, erotic-thriller lens. But I love a noble failure. Not sure actually how noble this is, but it was Richard Carpenter’s return to the music-making world after the death of Karen and therefore the death of The Carpenters. It’s like a late-80s Beach Boys record. But also not quite that good…
Sample Track: Say Yeah!
