Gemma Ray, The Exodus Suite (2016)
I was a fan of this album leading up to the gig – left it a bit late really to write a review of the album but I did review the gig; shame that not people were there. But it was bloody great. She’s quite fantastic is Gemma Ray and maybe it works even better on the record – because live is good but a bit too clean; on record you can more imagine the world she’s conjuring, this heady brew of brooding country-twang meets rockabilly-riffage. So, so good anyway…destined to be a ‘cult’ artist of sorts I guess. I was glad I dragged myself out of the house to get to the gig – because it’s hard these days to bother. This was well worth it though and the souvenir was grabbing this vinyl. Bonus 7” inch single, download card of the works and I nabbed a signature from Gemma after the show. Didn’t talk to her – I hate bugging people just after they’ve played, just politely asked for a scrawl. She obliged.
