V/A, The Lively Set [OST] (1964)
I haven’t seen the film but now I want to. A pretty great little soundtrack this – the score and songs credited to Bobby Darin – but a great deal of it is instrumental, slinkly little surf-pop and jazz-lite numbers; Randy Newman has a co-writing credit on a track in what I have to assume is very early days for him as a composer. Several of the cast members turn out for the vocal numbers – but it’s mostly the instrumentals that I dig; those in-crowd “hip” things that you heard on so many of the soundtracks from the “Swinging” time of the mid-60s, later lampooned but hardly ever beaten. I’ve got a new favourite soundtrack having just discovered this in a pile of records I’ve had in my collection for years. And a new film to search for – even if my suspicions tell me it’s the film’s soundtrack that will stick. Not the film.
