The Peddlers, Birthday (1969)
Recently I took a drive to Otaki to meet and record Roy Phillips for the podcast. We had a great ole chat – he has so many stories. And then after he signed my records. I had a couple of LPs by his group, The Peddlers. They were a shit-hot band, and Roy – living in NZ now – still tours the land and plays some of the oldies as well as some new songs. He’s still writing and recording. But the music of The Peddlers – a swinging little organ trio – is something that I still dig. I guess I heard them way back – part of the record collection growing up. Something like that. Well, actually, get this. I tell my dad about the podcast with Roy – I figure he might be vaguely interested, and that he has an old pal from his band days who I figure will definitely be interested. So I send him the link, ask him to pass it on, tell him a couple of the stories from the yarn. He rings me back a couple of days later and says, “yeah, Dave actually tells me we opened for The Peddlers once back in the late sixties or early seventies, or something like that…”. Huh!
Sample Track: Little Red Rooster
