Ike & Tina Turner, Nutbush City Limits (1973)
My mum loves Tina Turner – so that was my entry point, the “comeback” records of the 1980s. And then, hearing about Ike Turner (the bad stories, the good music) made me want to check out the earlier stuff, Ike’s songs and Tina’s performances – the singing, the dancing. But I’ve never owned any of the albums until now; it’s more been a song or two on some compilations, or Ike’s stuff on his own – the earliest material. This album was a must-buy for me because of the title song. I love everything else on it too but the hook was definitely that crazy-funk title song. The best. Tina and Ike – a combo that for so many reasons couldn’t work. But the ‘work’ they did stands up.
