Sharon O’Neill, This Heart This Song (1979)
The guy in the video shop says, “I didn’t pick you for a Sharon O’Neill fan” – and he means it a) because he’s heard my podcast with Sharon, well that’s my guess (I know he listens to the podcast) and b) because he doesn’t think I’m quite old enough to have been caught up in her music when she was making radio hits. And though I guess that’s true I just can’t remember ever not being a Sharon O’Neill fan. Great songs. And I musta been hearing them on the radio, I’ve got an older brother too. And folks that are into music – or certainly were back then. And Sharon was a big name. A big deal. And those songs. So many great songs. I am most definitely a fan. And it was a real honour to meet her earlier this year and record a conversation with her. She’s got some great yarns – she’s survived and made a name and a legacy in an industry that chews up and spits out. And the albums she made from the late 1970s through to the late 1980s are all terrific I reckon. But it starts right here.
