V/A, Jesus Christ Superstar [OST] (1973)
Never underestimate the power of the placement of a good song – the right song – at the right time in an ad or TV show or movie. It was hearing Everything’s Alright on an episode of Transparent (S.4) that got me digging this ole thing out, giving it a proper listen for the first time ever. Granted, that version of the song I half-remembered and instantly liked in that TV-context was actually from the 1970 cast recording (a better record I’m told) but hey I only have this version of Jesus Christ Superstar. And I hadn’t ever really listened to it – and I’ve found a few things I really like, some not so much – I am not a big fan of those shows; I didn’t really grow up with them, heard about them, sang some of the songs at school (which kinda put me off them if anything) and my mum got quite into a few of the soundtracks and cast recordings and would play them in her car on a loop. So I’ve absorbed some of it along the way. But yeah, funny to be ‘taught’ about old music in this new age like this. Part of what keeps me hanging in there I guess – watching, listening, collecting…(and Transparent is an excellent show for use of music and key selections).
