Ric Ocasek, This Side of Paradise (1987)
Time, as I’m sure the saying goes, takes time – and so it is that, in 2017, late in 2017, I’m finally hearing an album by Ric Ocasek of The Cars. His second solo album, his first after the (original) break-up of the band. I love The Cars. And here’s the weird thing – I’ve had this album for fucking years, one of the first LPs I claimed as my own (from memory it was in a pile of records left at my dad’s work, offered up for free to whoever wanted them – and I wanted them…) but I had never played this until just recently. So weird. I had the first solo album too, from that same haul I think, and now I have no idea where that’s gone. So it was to this – finally. And it’s good. So nice I played it twice. There’s something pretty wonderful about first hearing an album 30 years on from when it’s made – particularly when you’ve held onto it for about 20 years. I like that sort of a thing.
