Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass, Whipped Cream & Other Delights (1965)
People cringe about this album now – they know the story behind it and its cover. And there’s a store somewhere that only sells copies of it. I posted a copy of it on Facebook recently and had a whole heap of people pleased to see it (again) and many laughing at my bad taste. That’s as it should be I guess. A fair-enough cross-section. Actually, I only just got a copy of this the other day – and yes, the cover, the story behind it, all of that – yes, that informed the purchase. The kitsch qualities. Sure. Absolutely. But also I’m a fan of Herb Alpert. I’ve got a handful of his records. I play them a fair bit. Sneak a few songs into DJ sets, kick back and listen to the full albums at home. I’m a fan. No shame. Or if there is who cares.
