Commodores, Nightshift (1985)
My conflict is that I don’t consider this a “real” Commodores album at all (no Lionel, no Commodores) but I love the title track; guilty pleasure maybe, but it was my jam. When I was a kid I dug that song and I still do. It’s cheesy, but I have no real problem with cheese. Certainly not in the right doses. There’s a couple of other songs on here that are okay, but also not really. It’s by no stretch a great album – but I do think the title track is a great song. And the other singles are acceptable. I’ve held onto it – though I really just love the kickass Lionel-led funk Commodores; the proper Commodores. But I’m keeping this – the other non-Lionel Commodores records will never enter my collection. But this can stay.
