Winifred Atwell, “Winnie” – Winifred Atwell in Concert (1976)
Another recent/ish opshop-find for me, and someone asked me where/when I found out about Winifred Atwell. And I don’t really know. Probably some reissue CD comp from working in the store back in the day; I used to love trying out (almost) whatever came into the store. I do recall seeing a concert though where an artist paid tribute to Atwell and so that’s where it solidified. I bought this on a punt. ($1, no harm done). It’s in fine condition. I’m told, via eBay, that it’s rare. Not so sure about that. But it’s a gig recorded live in Australia, where she had some major popularity in her late career. The playing – stride, boogie, etc – is pretty ace. It’s a relic, of sorts. Not one to play all day every day but one to enjoy when you do decide to play it.
Sample Track: Tiger Rag
