Elvis Costello, Out of Our Idiot (1987)
This odds’n’sods compilation – rarities from across the first decade of the ultra-prolific Elvis Costello’s career – has been in my collection for years. I bought it in great excitement and to be honest I haven’t played it very much. But I have been collecting up almost everything, certainly everything I can find by Costello. He’s a pop writing genius. Sure, sure, the first decade is the best, but I like loads of what came next. This set currently interests me for that reason, these are the bits and pieces that fell through the cracks during that first decade. Collaborations, guest appearances, b-sides, special interest stuff – the album is actually credited to “Various Artists” but I’m listing it as a Costello release. Because of course it is. It’s all about him.
