Jeff Lynne, Armchair Theatre (1990)
I was pleased to find this. Jeff Lynne’s first solo album – arriving right at the end of the very hot streak that saw the Wilburys and all of the albums that Jeff worked on in and around that – Tom Petty, George Harrison, etc. I reckon Armchair Theatre is as good as anything from the Wilburys, certainly a lot better than their eventual second album and the best of it is up there with their classic tracks. Harrison sits in on this a bit and the overall feel is of The Beatles album Lynne has always wanted to make. I remember this being released – and yet I never owned it. I knew a couple of the songs and that was it. Just recently I started obsessing over it – thinking, too, it’d be great to one day maybe find it on vinyl. Then it turned up in that very best way – a shining beacon from a shop window. So I was in. And it was on hold. And then it was mine. And it’s here now – on double blue vinyl. And it sounds terrific. Jeff Lynne is a genius.
