The Velvet Underground, VU (1985)
I know I’m not alone in thinking that this is the best Velvet Underground album – and yes I know it’s a compilation; posthumous even – one that was responsible for one of the first waves of re-appreciation, or even appreciation. But I bought this pre-internet, when, as a Lou Reed fan I was just eager to check out his earlier band. I’ll even cop to thinking that J.J. Cale (who I loved) was a member of the VU; granted it didn’t take at all long to work out that it was a very different John Cale that had contributed to that band. I love all the VU albums, and I used wonder who it was possible at all to not love them. But each to their own, I’m sure it’s just noise and half-formed songs to others. To me, when I need a way back in, I turn to this album/this compilation. To me, on the right day they’re one of the most important bands to ever enter my life.
