Peter Gabriel, Plays Live (1983)
I can’t remember when I first got this – but I feel like it was actually the very first Peter Gabriel album I bought on vinyl; primarily because I didn’t know it. I knew the first four albums – which this covers highlights from (as a double live album) but these live versions were new to me. Some of them are more enjoyable to me than the studio versions, and as a live record it has its own feel and flow. When I started buying up all the Gabriel albums on CD I was disappointed to find this was reduced to a Highlights-styled single-disc album; that cost-saving thing fucked me off – it seemed to happen a lot with double live albums. But I bought the single CD anyway. And kept the LP. I’ve since traded in all my Gabriel CDs. But never with the records. I have all the 1980s ones. And one day I’ll get the newer ones on vinyl too. He’s a genius.
