Violent Femmes, Violent Femmes (1983)
It wasn’t the first Violent Femmes album I heard (that was a compilation) but it is the band’s first – and their very best. Everything you need to know about this band is on this record. It’s a classic debut. Perfect summation. There are other good songs on some of their albums but nothing really competes with this – not in terms of it being an absolute business card, statement of intentions. I have lived with this album in some shape or form since I first heard it all those years ago – when starting high school in fact. And it’s never not great. And it’s never a time to not hear it. It’s always a good decision to press play or drop a needle – even if it happens to have been years. It is always good. It always feels right. I’ve owned this a couple of times on vinyl actually – which is to say I thought I didn’t need it anymore. Then realised I was wrong. Very wrong. I fixed that.
