The Vinyl Countdown # 319

Aphex Twin, Come To Daddy (1997)
This was the very first thing I heard by Aphex Twin – it sent me down a path. I’ve never returned really. Never backed away. It’s all intriguing and invigorating. And the best of it is the best music I’ve ever – ever – heard. And the worst of it is still better than so much. I bought this EP – on CD – shortly after hearing it. I was working in a music store (at a time when we had those) and I started ordering everything. The CD singles, EPs, albums, remixes – the works. Then to vinyl. The videos too. I had to get to everything. And of course the Aphex world is a mystery still – no matter how much you hear. Which is the magic – really. The version of Come To Daddy that opens this – is still collosal and frightening and exciting all at once. And then there are tender, beautiful moments in and around the weirdness and madness. Which, ultimately, it why I love Aphex Twin so much.

Sample Track: Flim

The Vinyl Countdown is a document of every LP I listen to, brand new discoveries and old-old favourites; extremely pre-loved, previously abandoned or with the shrink-wrap having just been removed it’s all here at The Vinyl Countdown
