Joe Jackson, Night and Day (1982)
I can’t remember when or how I first got into Joe Jackson – but I feel like I’m forever catching up. Still haven’t read his memoir, missed the chance to see him live here some 15 years ago or so (keep hearing how great it was, know he’ll never come back). I owned the very best of CD and then vinyl. For a while that was it. Then the Live album from the 80s. Which is okay. Has brilliance. But only recently I picked up the incredible debut and now this. Always wanted this. Because I’m sure it’s his best collection of songs. I loved the song Steppin’ Out so much – so for that alone I had to have its parent-album. But the run of great songs on here is just brilliant. Songs I’ve known for most of my life. Great performances. Genius writing. I think in the scheme of things he’s underrated. But then, as always, with people like this – those that know know.
