Billie Holiday, Lady In Satin (1958)
I reckon Billie Holiday is the greatest. The absolute greatest. If I only get to hear one voice – it’s her voice. That would be my choice. I have been listening to her my whole life. I love her voice – and the sad story attached to it. And yet I don’t own a lot of her recordings. I have heard most of what she put into this world and this album – the last released in her lifetime – is my favourite. It’s only recently been collected up by me – and I don’t even have the version with the definitive cover. But I’ll return and buy that one day. (I know it. You know it). What matters most is the music though – and this was the version available to me at the time. And it worked. Already, it’s serving me well. I love listening to Billie Holiday very early in the morning. Something about it. It is just the very best.
