V/A, Hit Wave 82 (1982)
These Various Artists compilations…I used to have so many of them – they’re worthless too, all battered up and bear-soaked and tattered covers but they’re fun. And I still collect them up a bit. Though not as much as I once did. They were fun fillers for DJing – you could pack a few of these in your bag for some back-ups. Find a new thing to play each time. They were also a big part of how I learned about music – my aunty bought heaps of them. My folks bought a few. We had them on vinyl. And on cassette tape. There were ones, like this, that were NZ-made. Some record company person compiling the hits of the year and a few deeper album cuts and there was often a token local tune (or two). Anyway, I never feel like playing them through these days – but in my uni years when I started collecting them up again in earnest they were good fun to listen to. Good drinking music. Good party-starters. I’m (still) a sucker for great (and some naff) 80s pop songs.
