Van Halen, Van Halen II (1979)
In my first wave of being a Van Halen fan I found this album a little underwhelming. I mean that debut was just electric, unreal and in the way Van Halen was introduced to me it was all about the ‘big’ album – 1984 – so it was when the VH catalogue was reissued on CD and I was sent the whole lot that I started to realise that everything between 1978 and 1984 was also pretty fucking great – often amazing. And so Van Halen II has come to be a bit of a favourite, though I only just picked it up on vinyl very recently. Just a band at the height of their powers. Letting that caged beast of a frontman loose all over some great songs – but the three instrumentalists here all in very fine form, some of their very best work. We’ll never see a band like this ever again. They’re an utter phenomenon.
