Bangles, Different Light (1986)
I was obsessed with The Bangles. Maybe I still am actually. I’m a fan still at any rate. And this has always been my favourite album by them – the biggest number of their best songs.I have the Manic Monday single for the Prince connection and because it was possibly the song I loved most, or first, or both. But this album came into my life pretty quickly – first on cassette tape I think. And then vinyl. CD. And vinyl again. Lol.I had a crush on Susanna Hoffs– very much my first musical crush, probably my first crush. I really must dig out the band’s first album one day – but certainly their 80s albums, the three main ones, and this in particular, are good. Very good. Sometimes they feel really great in fact. The thing about the novelty-factor of being an all-girl band in the 80s is that it did their music a disservice – people seemed to think it was all about and only about the gimmick. Here was a band that wrote great songs, superb power-pop when at their best. And they had great taste, good record collections and they delivered choice cover versions.
