John Williams / Maria Farantouri, Songs And Guitar Pieces By Theodorakis (1971)
I would have bought this because I loved John Williams when I was a kid – and it was my essay-writing music at university – and I wouldn’t have known who Maria Faratouri was until I first heard this. Same with the composer Theodorakis – and I can’t say I’ve gone any further with them, but not because I don’t like this. I just haven’t looked for anything else. But I do like this music a lot. Williams’ guitar is soothing (always) and Farantouri is a passionate, expressive singer with a great voice. And the material here is wonderful folk music. I note the Silvios sticker. I can’t remember if I bought this from Silvios – but I did buy some records from that store, including, a memorable stack – maybe 120 records, something like that, for a dollar a pop when the shop was shutting down. Actually, it’s totally possible this was one of them. That was back at the end of 1995.
